Active Support

The Active Support Unit meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.30.pm. at the 11th H.Q. in Kentish Road, Shirley.

We currently have about 20 members. Our membership is made up of Scouters who have all worked in the various sections of the movement but now feel they do not want the weekly commitment. However many have a life time of experience and involvement with Scouts and feel that they would still like to belong to the “Scouting Family”. There is no upper or lower age limit to join us.

For some of our members A.S.U. is their only involvement with Scouting however some still hold other positions within the district.

We have been supporting some groups on a regular basis because of leader shortages. In a typical year we would assist at the following events:

  • Beavers Loggerheads Competition, Christingle Service
  • Cub Scrapheap Challenge Competition, Sports, Athletes Badge, Carol Service
  • Scouts Madison Hunt
  • Walkabout Explorers Summit Expedition
  • District Swimming Gala, AGM, St Georges Day and Founders Day Parades
  • We also support the British Legion selling poppies and in 2014, raised £2,500.

We also have a social calendar and in the past have visited the Poppy Factory in London, The R.H.S. Garden centre at Wisley and had a minibus tour of the New Forest and Christchurch and have been out for a meal.

In the year 2014 we gave 350 man hours of service to the groups, the district and the community.
